01What it does

What Shep's Place Senior Dog Sanctuary does

Mission

To love and care for senior dogs

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Program

  1. Providing refuge for abandoned old dogs in the kansas city area. We are a small, private shelter that focuses on the care of senior dogs. We hope to find our dogs new families, but that is often difficult for seniors, so if we can't, we will be their permanent, loving home. We focus on senior dogs who have already spent time in a shelter or rescue, waiting to find a family. The dog's quality of life is our highest goal at shep's place, with ample play time, freedom of movement, and caring, human interaction. We believe our silver-muzzled friends deserve to enjoy their lives and be themselves for as long as they are able. The goal is to provide a home for the dogs, to get them out of their kennels, and let them wander the house, play in the yard, or sleep, as they choose.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 5 funders, grant income fell $81k → $34k.

6 of 14 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 76% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is

SHEP'S PLACE SENIOR DOG SANCTUARY leans on a few funders — its largest provides 37% of grant income and the top three 65%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

80% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SHEP'S PLACE SENIOR DOG SANCTUARY.

How long its funders stay

50% of SHEP'S PLACE SENIOR DOG SANCTUARY's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 71% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $251k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
