What Sheared Inc does
Mission
We advocate healing from abuse and trauma rather than coping with symptoms, in order to transform lives, and ultimately, society. We achieve this by providing trauma-focused resources and education and by producing and partnering with relevant film, television, and theatre, empowering the social change necessary to create a healing movement.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Emdr therapy training: emdr (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy is a leading, evidence-based, trauma-focused treatment modality. It is highly effective in treating the widespread conditions related to trauma but often cost-prohibitive for professionals, especially those in under-resourced communities, to get trained in. Healing tree facilitates and sponsors emdria-approved, 52-hour emdr therapy trainings (including post-training consultation) done by an internationally recognized, one-of-a-kind training team in this cutting-edge modality. As of december 2025, healing tree has provided trainings for nearly 550 therapists (90% of whom were on full scholarship), serving approximately 27,500 youth in the foster care, child welfare and juvenile justice systems per year.

Our short film 'silk' (used in the 'silk' screening + workshop program) is a prime example of this. In 2025, we shot our next short film 'the knock shadow'. In the 1980's, a young, female therapist at a psychiatric ward encounters a patient whose symptoms lead her to question what is real and what isn't working in the field. This film explores the origins of the modern trauma field, and the early days of treatment modalities emdr and ifs, through the lens of a psychological thriller. 'the knock shadow' is written by lanford wilson award-winning and showtime series staff writer ren dara santiago, directed by lauren sowa ('brett was a f*ck'), features emmy award winner lea delaria (orange is the new black') and is produced by marissa ghavami ('mass'), sowa ('marisol') and delaria. In 2025, healing tree also continued developing a full-length play, 'the big bad', which explores intergenerational trauma, deprogramming and the supernatural. 'the big bad' is also written by ren dara santiago, directed by mack brown (ars nova artist in residence and lead…
$130,528 spent$36,134 earned by the program40% of program spendingFiscal sponsorships: healing tree offers fiscal sponsorships for film, television, theatre and other projects which are in alignment with our mission. Being fiscally sponsored by a nonprofit means that your project gets to benefit from the 501(c)(3) status that we have, making your donors' (monetary and in kind I.e. Camera equipment, locations, food) contributions tax-deductible. A small percentage is charged in order to cover our administrative costs to oversee the fiscal sponsorship and budgetary documentation must be provided for our records. Please note, fiscal sponsorship does not mean that the nonprofit provides funding for your project.
$19,070 spentof which $18,916 as grants6% of program spendingSilk screening + workshop: healing tree's 'silk' screening + workshop explores the hardest to spot red flags of abuse and trauma. This program centers around a screening of our short film 'silk', which was an official selection at an academy award qualifying festival, was directed by john magaro ('past lives', 'carol', 'the big short') and stars mainstream talent. 'silk' follows a gifted aerialist who struggles to recognize she's being gaslit by her new boyfriend. The accompanying workshop dives deeper into what was illustrated on screen. A powerpoint presentation explores red flags of psychological abuse - including gaslighting, love bombing, blame shifting, projection and stonewalling - as well as unexpected ways trauma impacts the brain and body. We also cover tools for effective intervention and healing. Additionally, we lead participants through grounding exercises before and after the film and end with a q&a. Surveys show a significant increase in survivor and perpetrator self-identification and a commitment to using healing tree's resources to get effective treatment. As of december 2025, healing tree has sponsored over 800 participants including students, domestic violence…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $116k to $6k (−95%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2024 15% · 2025 51%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
87% of SHEARED INC’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (91% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income fell $10k → $5k.
4 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 71% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of SHEARED INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
SHEARED INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 27% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left
88% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SHEARED INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 100% · 2018 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
71% of SHEARED INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $10k that is directly attributable, 76% of it comes from New York funders.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $26k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
