Mission

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
Black history month - when the society was founded in 1955 it was the local chapter of the association for the study of african american life and history (asalh), the creator and national sponsor of black history month. As such, annually during the month of february, the society presents a variety of educational exhibits, programs and activities based upon the theme established by asalh. Each year the society launches black history month in san francisco with a kickoff program in city hall at 12:00 pm on the first friday of february.
$6,203 spent7% of program spendingHistorical exhibits - the society curates and presents 2 to 4 exhibits each year in our library/gallery. When feasible, pop-up versions of exhibits are then presented at local public schools under the auspices of teachers and/or librarians. The theme for our exhibits is based on the national theme for black history month and other topics that are particularly relevant. The objective is always to educate the students about african american history and culture, current events, and art.

Once identified, these would be come potential candidates for the art and historic plaques to be placed along the one-block "history walk" portion of buchanan mall. During the height of the covid 9 epidemic, meetings and events were held both in-person and online. While other parts of the larger recreation and park project stalled, the buchanan mall history walk project moved forward resulting in not only data for future use, but a documentary film about the neighborhood, "the fillmore," during the end of the jazz age and into the early phases of redevelopment - which were are poignantly recalled by community members. Finally, a companion souvenir color booklet was prepared to be distributed to participants and others.

The society strives to instill pride in african american youth by conducting educational programs from in-house and through partnerships with the san francisco alliance of black school educators (sfabse). We provide fiscal sponsorship for the sfabse. In partnership with the sfabse we annually sponsor a program that awards scholarships to college-bound african american students. Additionally, we host a book club in partnership with the african american center of the sf public library and we host geneology workshops to assist participants in researching their family histories.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2020, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2020, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $88k to $116k (+31%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.

Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
77% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SAN FRANCISCO AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORICAL & CULTURAL SOCIETY.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 68% · 2020 100% · 2021 41% · 2022 87% · 2023 86% — growing more concentrated.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $11k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
