What Saint Louis String Collective does

Mission

Saint Louis String Collective is a music education organization. The organization promotes creative, multi-genre string instrument playing through educational programming and performance opportunities. We believe that high quality, diverse music education should be available to people of all ages, abilities and incomes. We believe that supporting the arts is essential to the health and well-being of our community. We believe that mastering techniques and styles outside of the traditional classical pedagogy, such as developing improvisational skills and learning by ear develops well-rounded musicianship. We believe that learning a variety of musical styles and traditions cultivates compassion and curiosity.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Saint Louis String Collective hosted its third annual St. Louis String Summit, a summer camp for violin, viola, cello and bass players to explore many styles of music as well as contemporary playing techniques. Students took classes in regional fiddle styles, improvisation, electronic music, and contemporary techniques. The camp is for beginning, intermediate, advanced, and professional string players ages 12 through adult. St. Louis String Summit hosted 35 participants this year, with 6 participants awarded partial or full scholarship.

String jams are held the first and third Sunday of the month where participants learn to play a variety of musical styles in a supportive and relaxed environment. The last Sunday of each month is an All Ages Open Mic, an opportunity to perform in an informal and relaxed environment. These events are open to all ages and ability levels. Each event hosts an average of 20 participants, and 150 new and recurring participants annually.

  3. Saint Louis String Collective coaches a semester-long string ensemble comprised of adult amateur players. Participants learn to play and arrange music in a group setting, focusing on non-classical styles such as American fiddle styles, rock, jazz, and folk music from around the world. Participants develop important musical skills including learning songs by ear, improvising, accompanying others, and applying music theory in creative ways. The ensemble encourages collaboration, creativity, and musical exploration in a supportive environment.
