01What it does

What Riverside Conservancy Inc does

Mission

To create and expand sustainable living shorelines through educational outreach and land conservancy programs that utilize community-engaged design and to promote the heritage of working waterfronts and healthy habitats for the benefit of the indian river lagoon and for the greater public health, economic prosperity and recreation of the surrounding communities.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Shoreline restoration.the restoration of shorelines (by planting native vegetation and restoring oyster reefs) filters upland pollution that would otherwise flow into waterways or enter groundwater after rain events. Living shorelines also create aquatic habitat for fish, birds, and other animals and protect upland properties from storm surge/erosion.

  2. Public education & outreach.education is an important part of conservation. What we want to achieve is not only physical ecological conservation, but also an understanding that a healthy community relies on harmony between individuals and the nature around them. The riverside young leaders in conservation, regional science fair, and shore symposium are all investments in students and future generations of eco-ambassadors.

  3. Clam restoration.clams are filter feeders that remove excess nutrients and other pollutants from the river. Adult clams can filter up to 20 gallons of water per day. Because the clam population in the indian river lagoon has declined drastically since 2011, which correlates to the striking decline in water quality, organizations including riverside conservancy, state agencies, and universities have invested in restoring/repopulating millions of clams into the estuary.

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income rose $80 → $56k.

2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 8% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of RIVERSIDE CONSERVANCY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $7k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
