What Rise Outside does
Mission
We offer outdoor education and guided experiences on rock, ice, trail, and anywhere we connect with nature. Hiring us creates mentorship opportunities for our diverse outdoor leaders and funds our programming for groups who have traditionally encountered barriers to realizing their potential outside.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
At Rise Outside we saw a gap in dedicated mentorship for new and established climbers. That is why we launched a scholarship program in partnership with Rock & Snow -- which provides two climbers with six sessions of one-on-one mentorship. This year the program supported two climbers that came to us through our affinity partnerships -- Adaptive Climb Group and Brown Girls Climb. During their mentorship, the climbers learned skills such as anchor building, lead climbing, Single Pitch Instructor skills and multi-pitch climbing.

The program worked to empower participants to learn together, create community and connection to the outdoors. Through a grant from Muir Valley, this program was provided at the low cost of $50 per participant and included two days of guided climbing, camping passes and food.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2022, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2022, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $84k to $33k (−61%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
42% of RISE OUTSIDE’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (92% for the typical peer).
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 1 of the last 3 reported years ran a deficit.
