What Ride Up Grades Inc does
Mission
Ride Up Grades seeks to bridge the transportation and health divide in NYC through youth cycling programs. We break down the barriers to entry for young people from all backgrounds to start commuting and competing. We believe that the cycling world benefits from diversity, and that ALL young people can benefit from access to cycling. We seek to level the playing field by creating equity and access in road cycling and racing, and by building networks of diverse, confident and hard pedaling future leaders.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
Ride Up Grades @ TREK Bike Camp - The heartbeat of Ride Up Grades. Always held for two weeks, this camp is for riders who have the basic (can pedal unassisted and ride in a relatively straight line and brake safely) We take them from awkward handling and no understanding of gearing to being able to ride competently in a group, handle hills, corners, flat tires and more. Every camp includes mechanics and nutrition components. They begin as solo riders and emerge inevitably as a team. Every year coaches and campers are moved (literally to tears at the last day circle) by the transformation 150 miles in two weeks makes in the individual cyclist and group as a whole.
$49,472 spent86% of program spendingAdvanced Week Summer Camp - Currently hosted by Roys Sheepshead Cycle in August. Advanced week is for riders who have completed the July summer camp or who come on recommendation from other cycling programs. The mechanics are more advanced, the pace is faster on the rides and they cover about the same amount of miles as our July camp in just one week.
$7,600 spent13% of program spendingSponsor-Shift - Our play on a sponsorship. Ride Up Grades loans a gently used and well-maintained road bike to riders who are in need, who demonstrate commitment to riding a certain number of miles per week/month, who engage in their communities through cycling, and who represent Ride Up Grades as an outstanding youth citizen. We also provide gently used gear, like helmets, jerseys, gloves and new padded cycling shorts.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2023, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2023, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $66k to $69k (+5%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
92% of RIDE UP GRADES INC’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (39% for the typical peer).
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 1 of the last 2 reported years ran a deficit.

Who funds it, year by year
2021 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income rose $24k → $29k.
3 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 52% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of RIDE UP GRADES INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
RIDE UP GRADES INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 48% of grant income and the top three 92%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
52% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund RIDE UP GRADES INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2021 100% · 2022 59% · 2023 40% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
52% of RIDE UP GRADES INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $47k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside New York, across 1 state.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $51k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
