01What it does

What Redtone Records does

Mission

Redtone Records is as a nonprofit, community-based record label and recording studio that provides free, professional music and video production to cultural artists with positive messages. We have a specific focus on preserving and promoting various forms of traditional and roots music from around the world. Additionally we will be conducting regular youth songwriting competitions, incentivizing positive lyrical content from young, aspiring, community artists. Our activities include: identifying and recruiting artists, both locally and internationally; subsidizing travel and lodging expenses for artist residencies when applicable; operating a community-based recording studio; producing music and video; hosting and promoting concerts, festivals and similar activities; pursuing song placements in tv, film, advertising, etc.; marketing and promotion of redtone artists; submitting redtone productions to major artists for possible program revenue to fund redtone activities. Redtone's missio

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. 2024 was mostly a year of sustaining ongoing support for the artists weve been working with the past few years. We produced tiffanis second redtone album while also sponsoring and co-producing a life-sustaining practices fellowship she created. Part of this fellowship included the creation of a podcast, recorded in our studio, focused on black health and wellness and featuring redtone music. We released effie zilchs 4th album, multitudes, a celebration of the sounds and spirit of a rich bay area musical legacy going back to san franciscos golden age of the counterculture movement. We released kiazi malongas second album, zu dia ngoma, with some singles having already been released in late 2023. Over this same period of time, kiazi and his musical mentor traveled extensively throughout congo- brazzaville, finding singers and musicians often in more remote communities and bringing them into the city to record their traditional music. Kiazi brought these recordings to our studio where we began organizing and mixing the recordings to produce a full album that will present a wide range of traditional musical styles from various congolese ethnic and language groups. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income rose $160k → $175k.

3 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 99% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of REDTONE RECORDS’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

REDTONE RECORDS leans on a few funders — its largest provides 83% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund REDTONE RECORDS.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

99% of REDTONE RECORDS's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $10k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from California funders.

CA

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.1M arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
