01What it does

What Place Initiative does

Mission

Proactive Leadership Advocating for Climate and Equity (PLACE) Initiative works for climate action with equitable outcomes, to achieve people-centric solutions to the climate-driven challenges of our future.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Program

  1. In 2024, PLACE Initiative continued advancing equitable climate action by supporting community-driven planning and policy innovation. We provided direct technical assistance to four rural Appalachian towns through the Appalachian Regional Commission-funded "What's Next East Kentucky?!" initiative, guiding local leaders and residents through the PLACE Assessment process to identify opportunities for climate resilience, economic revitalization, and housing security. PLACE co-hosted the Transportation, Mobility, and the Public Realm Urban Thinkers Campus as part of the Place Summit in Bentonville, Arkansas, in partnership with ULI NWA, convening over 150 professionals, advocates, and community members. Participants developed actionable strategies to shift transportation investment toward walkable, people-centered systems aligned with climate, equity, and fiscal responsibility goals. Through our Climate-Ready Corridors campaign, we collaborated with local and regional partners to promote infill development, cooperative housing models, and climate-adaptive infrastructure along key corridors in Portland, Oregon and beyond. PLACE supported policy research and public engagement around…

Each line starts at 100 in 2023, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2023, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

1 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 22% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of PLACE INITIATIVE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PLACE INITIATIVE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 36% of grant income and the top three 86%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PLACE INITIATIVE.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

PLACE INITIATIVE draws 81% of its grant income from funders outside Oregon, across 3 states in all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $15k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
