01What it does

What Organic Farmers Association does

Mission

The mission of the Organic Farmers Association is to provide a strong and unified national voice for domestic certified organic producers so that organic agriculture will become the basis of a viable United States food and agricultural policy and production system to support a healthier planet for the benefit of all life. Our purpose is to build and support a farmer-led national organic farmer movement and national policy platform by: developing and advocating policies that benefit organic farmers;strengthening and supporting the capacity of organic farmers and farm organizations; supporting collaboration and leadership among state, regional and national organic farmer organizations; and welcoming support and cooperation with like-minded individuals and organizations.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Education program activities are designed to support organic farmers success through technical assistance and educational resources. The national organic farmer education network (nofen) alerts farmers to organic education being offered by organic organization members nationwide. Webinars and digital organic education resources help educate farmers and consumers about issues such as crop insurance, labor, markets, organic transition, and mental health. Education for the general public is also a main goal through the website, social media, and quarterly magazine: organic voice. Ofa also created and manages the organic career network to support organic workforce development so that organic farmers have the support they need to be successful.

  2. Advocacy Program Activities focus on aggregating input from organic farmer members and organic farm organizations into cohesive policy statements for members to vote on before becoming part of the Policy Platform. The Policy Platform is listed online and includes proposals relating to improving organic farming certification, integrity, and fraud prevention as well as improving federal programs for organic farmers. An organic farmer advocacy day, which provides opportunities for organic farmers to meet their legislators and their staff, is organized annually in Washington, D.C.
