01What it does

What OpenAQ Inc does

Mission

By providing universal access to air quality data, OpenAQ empowers a global community of changemakers to solve air inequality.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Air Quality Data Platform: To meet the needs of air quality researchers, community advocates, journalists and other air quality changemakers, OpenAQ provides the worlds largest open-access, open-source air quality data platform. In 2025, we aggregated new data from ~3,400 locations, including ~1,400 locations in low- and middle-income countries, reaching a total of more than 22,000 locations in 141 countries. We saw a 187% increase in registered users, totaling more than 19,000. Active API use leaped by 550% to 2,700 per quarter and active OpenAQ Explorer use increased by 34% to 250 per day. ~175 publications cited their use of OpenAQ, an average of over 14 per month.

  2. Community Engagement: Through webinars, trainings, speaking engagements, conference attendance, one-on-one meetings, impact stories and more, we introduced potential new users to the OpenAQ data platform and supported existing data practitioners. Through our Clean Air Community Ambassador program, we provided professional leadership training to 10 emerging air quality leaders from the world's most polluted regions. We connected air quality data producers and users across sectors and geographies to support an international learning environment. These and other outreach activities have resulted in greater use of the platform for air quality analysis and clean air advocacy.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income fell $100k → $66k.

3 of 10 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 11% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of OpenAQ Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

OpenAQ Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 31% of grant income and the top three 74%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

97% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund OpenAQ Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

50% of OpenAQ Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 70% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $142k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
