01What it does

What Nick and Kelly Childrens Heart Fund does

Mission

The Nick & Kelly Childrens Heart Fund focuses raising money and awareness for Arizona families with children who have congenital heart disease. The main purpose is to provide an annual camp experience for children suffering from congenital heart disease at a camp located in AZ.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The main exempt purpose of the organization is to provide a fun summer camp experience for children with congenital heart disease and other heart defects. The organization has sponsored 1800 camper experiences over the last 25 years. The camp has a medically trained staff on hand to care for the special needs children ages 7-17. The kids enjoy a full camping experience of sleeping in a cabin, nature walks, water sports and recreation to arts and crafts. The camp was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 and was held virtually in 2021, but was able to be held in person for 2022. All workers at the camp (except the camp director) are volunteers and are not paid. About 75% of the volunteers are previous campers that have first hand experience with the camp and heart disease. There were 60 volunteers at the camp for the week. None of the officers or directors of the organization are paid for their time.

  2. The Nick & Kelly Childrens Heart Fund covers expenses for families of children with congenital heart disease that are often not paid for by many insurance policies. These expenses may include ambulance service, air evacuation, some prescription medications and travel and lodging for the family during heart surgeries that are not performed locally. Families seeking assistance are referred to the Nick & Kelly Childrens Heart Fund by their cardiologist, social worker or other medical professional.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $500 → $50k.

3 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 93% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NICK AND KELLY CHILDRENS HEART FUND’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NICK AND KELLY CHILDRENS HEART FUND leans on a few funders — its largest provides 86% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

93% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NICK AND KELLY CHILDRENS HEART FUND.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

93% of NICK AND KELLY CHILDRENS HEART FUND's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $26k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Arizona, across 3 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $331k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
