01What it does

What New Rising Ventures does

Mission

New Rising Ventures supports early-stage, nonpartisan entrepreneurs and activists transforming our democracy through innovation and bridges a critical gap not fulfilled by traditional grant-makers or venture capital. Our signature four activities include investments and grantmaking, portfolio support, field building, and convenings.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. In 2025, New Rising Ventures continued to build strong momentum across our responsible ai and latine voices for democracy initiatives, while deepening our focus on internal culture and operational sustainability. Latine voices for democracy (lv4d) is the first u.s.-based accelerator of its kind delivered bilingually and focused on latine-led news organizations and content creators. It is designed to strengthen local information ecosystems, advance nonpartisan civic education, support community-serving journalism, and empower trusted latine-led organizations to combat misinformation and foster civic engagement. In 2025, we expanded lv4d by launching a second accelerator cohort, bringing creators and local newsrooms together as equal partners in informing the public and encouraging civic participation. Over seven months, participants receive targeted mentorship, training, and partnership support from mission-aligned technology and media organizations to deepen their community engagement, storytelling, and audience-building capacity, as well as capital, technical tools, and training on capital structure and impact measurement to support their long-term sustainability. Each line starts at 100 in 2024, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2024, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

4 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 45% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NEW RISING VENTURES’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NEW RISING VENTURES leans on a few funders — its largest provides 55% of grant income and the top three 89%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

45% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NEW RISING VENTURES.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

NEW RISING VENTURES draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside California, across 1 state in all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $248k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
