What Creating the Future does
Mission
To show people how to change the systems they find themselves in, to aim those systems at bringing out the best in people, all by changing the questions they ask.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
Experimenting: completing our 10-year mission in 2025, we focused on implementing what our community asked us to accomplish in the final years of our mission. This is a huge experiment in sharing the implementation of our mission, rather than building an ongoing program that needs to be sustained in perpetuity. In 2025 we detailed what is needed for this final phase, to document what we've learned from the 30+ demonstration projects we've completed to evidence the power of catalytic thinking to create change. To that end, we began working closely with academic advisors, including a phd student from the university of nebraska, omaha, to apply academic rigor to this effort. See https://creatingthefuture.org/2025-accomplishments/ for details.
$30,664 spent100% of program spendingEducation programs: in 2025, the focus of all our efforts was on supporting changemakers who are struggling with the new reality. To that end, we ramped up all our education efforts. We produced 14 podcast episodes focused on the question, "what actually creates social change?" we continued to develop new classes, designing webinars to assist our community members in their own change efforts. Our biweekly newsletter became a weekly newsletter, again to support our community. We continued to facilitate a robust community of practice for practitioners applying catalytic thinking in their lives and their work. In 2025 we also increased our public speaking efforts, keynoting and teaching workshops from new york to alaska to new zealand and australia. And we more aggressively pursued writing for publications with broad reach, including stanford social innovation review and nonprofit quarterly as well as academic journals and publications. The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $21k to $3k (−87%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
45% of CREATING THE FUTURE’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (65% for the typical peer).
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 5 of the last 9 reported years ran a deficit.
Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income rose $5 → $16.
1 of 1 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of CREATING THE FUTURE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
100% of CREATING THE FUTURE's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $35 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
