What Nene Research and Conservation does
Mission
Protecting and restoring native Hawaiian species and ecosystems through research, advocacy, education, and community-based conservation.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Program
The Hawaii County Council reduced the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph on a stretch of Kalanianaole Street in Hilo, from the entrance of James Kealoha Beach Park to Kings Landing. This measure aims to protect pedestrians and the endangered nene (Hawaiian goose), which have been increasingly present in the area due to successful habitat restoration efforts. The speed limit change was prompted by community advocacy following multiple nene fatalities caused by vehicle collisions.
