01What it does

What National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Sc does

Mission

The national society of the colonial dames of america in the state of south carolina is dedicated to furthering knowledge and appreciation of our colonial/national heritage through historic preservation, patriotic service, and educational projects.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2024 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

As of march 1, 2025, nscda-sc restricted the powder magazine museum operations to school group educational programs, and other groups or individuals by appointment only. This was done in order to develop a more sustainable business model for the future based on current trends for historic museum admissions. As of september 5, 2025, the museum was re-opened to foot traffic on a part time basis while the new operational structure is being worked out.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. The nscda-sc owns and operates the powder magazine museum, south carolina's oldest public building. Completed in 1713, it was used for gunpowder storage in the protection of charles town from 1713-1748 and during the american revolution. As one of the few surviving structures of pre-revolutionary south carolina, it was listed as a national historic landmark in september, 1989. In fy 2024-25, the museum welcomed a total of 7,677 visitors including 1,086 students participating in educational field trips. In the fall, the museum offered a 4 part zoom lecture series on early life in colonial carolina. The museum also partners with other nonprofits, k-12 educators, colleges, and universities on projects and activities that achieve both historic preservation and education.

  2. The nscda-sc annually provides many educational awards related to colonial history & education. This year 6 "teaching of history" scholarships were awarded to college students majoring in history. A summer internship was funded for a student at our museum, awards were given for veteran's programs in sc and for state & regional history related programs. On the national level, the society contributed to an american indian medical scholarship for a medical student. The organization provides annual contributions to historic properties (dumbarton, gunston hall, & sulgrave manor) owned or supported by our national organization (4,750) & to sc exempt organizations whose missions align with our mission (2,850). We honor program speakers with contributions to exempt organizations connected to their topic (1,100).

Each year there are 3 state society membership meetings and 4 additional business board meetings. There are approximately 25 local town committee meetings annually.

Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $11k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
