01What it does

What Musizi University Foundation does

Mission

Musizi University Foundation's mission is to support the development of higher education in Uganda. We do this through working with a partner university project in Kampala, Uganda, which is called Musizi University project. Musizi University is an upcoming private non-profit liberal arts and sciences university in Uganda that will offer a transformative education for students starting with degree programs in entrepreneurship, software engineering, and data science. To accomplish this mission, we focus on raising awareness about higher education in Uganda in the US and raise funds from people who want to support its development.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. This grant supported Musizi University to offer its second Africa Family Business Week that convened 100 business leaders from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Morocco. The executive education program equipped participants with foundational frameworks for understanding the nuances of operating and sustaining a family business across 4 full day sessions, and the African Family Business Conclave brought together family business owners, advisers, and academics to engage in discussions about the challenges faced by local family businesses and how to strategize for long-term sustainability. This supports Musizi University Foundation's mission of supporting higher education in Uganda because the family business program under the entrepreneurship degree will be one of the inaugural programs of Musizi University.

  2. This grant supported Musizi University project in Uganda, which is a project to start the first liberal arts college in Uganda, to complete the renovation and furnishing of its first campus and housing for personnel. This facility is required for the accreditation process in Uganda. At the campus, the grant enabled the following: metal works, kitchen renovation, and furniture. All rooms are now fully furnished and ready for administrators, staff, and students to use along with a kitchen to support cafe services. This program will serve around 144 college students and 30 staff members of Musizi University in its first year of operation, and the university campus is also used to support programming for 40 students participating in the Musizi WINGS college bridge program. The grant also enabled renting housing for personnel to support international volunteers who work on university projects in Uganda. This enabled 6 international volunteers to work in Uganda in summer 2025. This supports Musizi University Foundation's mission of supporting higher education in Uganda by developing the facilities that are required for accreditation and full university operations.

  3. This grant supported the accreditation fees for Musizi University to apply for a provisional license. A provisional license allows Musizi to operate as a degree-granting higher education institution in Uganda. The National Council for Higher Education requires these fees in order to conduct its due diligence of the applicant institution through inspection visits. This supports the mission of Musizi University Foundation because this process enables Musizi University to begin operations as an accredited institution through obtaining its license.

  4. This grant supported the Musizi WINGS program for 50 high school students in Uganda. The WINGS (Work and Industry Neutral Growth Skills) program is a two-year leadership program for high school students that prepares students for college and career. Workshops were conducted in January, April, and August; students engaged in debates, design thinking, personal statement-writing, and college applications. 100% of the 19 high school seniors in the program obtained admission to universities, and 7 are serving as mentors to the next generation of WINGS students. This aligns with Musizi University Foundation's mission to support higher education in Uganda because this prepares the high school students to apply and attend universities.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

5 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 32% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MUSIZI UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 7 of 8 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MUSIZI UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 27% of grant income and the top three 68%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

32% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MUSIZI UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

MUSIZI UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION draws 60% of its grant income from funders outside California, across 3 states in all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $36k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
