What Morris County Historical Society does
Mission
The mission of the Morris County Historical Society, as the representative of a county with an exciting and unique place in the history of the united states, is to discover, preserve and make known the history of morris county through exhibits, programs, publications, and preservation advocacy.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Program
The society preserves and promotes morris county history by actively collecting artifacts, documents, and photographs of local historic significance. The 33,000 objects in our collection serve as the basis for rotating exhibits, programs, lectures, blogs, research requests, and loans (short-term, long-term, and permanent) to other similarly-missioned organizations throughout morris county and nj. The society's in person and virtual public offerings attract visitors, attendees, and engagements from across the united states. The most outwardly apparent ways the organization embodies its mission is through the active preservation, restoration, and interpretation of acorn hall (1853), its carriage house, and associated 6-acre landscape. Since 1971, when the acorn hall property became part of the society's collection, staff and volunteers have provided tours of the building, which is recognized as one of nj's best preserved historic house museums. As a leading historical society in nj, the society serves in a leadership capacity coordinating, publicizing, and supporting events, programs, and initiatives with all of morris county's history organizations, like preparations for the…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2021 to 2022, from $3.1M to $2.5M (−20%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 57% · 2018 33% · 2019 26% · 2020 36% · 2021 46% · 2022 66% · 2023 24% · 2024 14% · 2025 33%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
73% of MORRIS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 5 funders, grant income rose $15k → $75k.
3 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 15% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of MORRIS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
MORRIS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY leans on a few funders — its largest provides 62% of grant income and the top three 83%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 52% · 2022 100% · 2023 80% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
50% of MORRIS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 75% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
100% of MORRIS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY's grant income comes from New Jersey funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $41k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
