01What it does

What More Than Walking Incorporated does

Mission

This corporation is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, including, for such purposes, the making of monetary and educational material distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code. More Than Walking Incorporated's specific purpose is to provide therapeutic and peer mentor guidance to assist persons with spinal cord injuries to successfully reintegrate into their communities. To accomplish this, the Corporation will engage in the film production and distribution of independence skills demonstrations by spinal cord injured persons and rehabilitation therapists. The Corporation will also seek out partner organizations worldwide with which to collaborate in producing and distributing demonstration videos, disseminating information about local community resources, and offering other support to persons with spinal cord injuries.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Program

  1. For the continued development of an online video course and community for sharing skills for independence after spinal cord injury/disease, we registered 29 new peer mentor volunteers, published 19 peer mentor videos on our YouTube Channel, with 166,200 new views and a net gain of 595 subscribers. We received dozens of requests for peer assistance; much of the peer assistance provided was done in partnership with SPINALpedia.com, run by the Determined2Heal Foundation, which paid More Than Walking for its services. More Than Walking collaborated with the Wheels of Happiness Foundation (Georgia) and other disability advocates to support several individuals with spinal cord injuries in Nigeria and Kenya for emergency health needs.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base narrowed from 4 funders to 2 funders, grant income fell $24k → $11k.

2 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 43% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MORE THAN WALKING INCORPORATED’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MORE THAN WALKING INCORPORATED leans on a few funders — its largest provides 43% of grant income and the top three 95%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

95% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MORE THAN WALKING INCORPORATED.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 53% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

MORE THAN WALKING INCORPORATED draws 51% of its grant income from funders outside Connecticut, across 2 states in all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $40k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
