01What it does

What Michigan Animal Health Foundation does

Mission

To provide financial assistance to individuals and institutions for educational and scientific purposes in order to advance science to benefit the health and welfare of animals.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The ask the veterinarian project recognizes that veterinary services are significantly limited in michigan's upper peninsula. Tv station wnmu is producing a short series of two shows that allow callers to ask veterinarians general questions. The series will allow the station to produce additional resources that will allow viewers to decide if seeking veterinary services for their pet is warranted.

  2. The companion animal fund was created to subsidize non-elective veterinary care for pets whose owners would otherwise be unable to afford it. Some of the groups most dependent on companion animals often experience difficulty in obtaining treatment in the case of unforeseen circumstances due to inadequate finances. Thus, mahf created the companion animal fund to help pet owners who have income under the federal poverty level, are on medicaid or are on wic (women infants & children) get the necessary care for their beloved animals.

  3. The companion animal pfas exposure assessment and health study seeks to determine the most likely sources of pfas exposure for household pets, and to identify exposure-related blood chemistry changes.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 2 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $7k → $99.

2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 64% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MICHIGAN ANIMAL HEALTH FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MICHIGAN ANIMAL HEALTH FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 60% of grant income and the top three 95%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MICHIGAN ANIMAL HEALTH FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

64% of MICHIGAN ANIMAL HEALTH FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $3k that is directly attributable, 67% of it comes from Michigan funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $5k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
