What Mentor Me does

Mission

Empowering youth in need to achieve their highest potential by matching them with an adult mentor.

As stated on its FY2020 Form 990.

Program

Mentor Me is an organization established in 2006 that empowers youth to reach their highest potential through mentoring and advocacy. Serving youth in the petaluma area, the organization currently has over 275 active one-on-one mentorships, over 90 wait-listed students in group mentoring (needing one-on-one matches), and youth and families in case management who receive more intensive services, such as substance use awareness and anger management education. As the recognized leader with a proven model in youth mentoring and advocacy in south sonoma county, Mentor Me works with other youth-serving organizations, agencies, and school districts to provide a comprehensive safety net for the youth throughout the community.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base narrowed from 5 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $90k → $8k.

2 of 10 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 4% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MENTOR ME’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MENTOR ME has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 26% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

10% of MENTOR ME's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 60% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $6k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
