What Mental Health Client Action Network does
Mission
Mhcan is a client-run organization designed to provide mutual support and networking, have a voice in all matters which affect them and to create programs controlled by clients. They advocate for the right to choose their own life paths and educate the public from their own perspectives.
As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.
Program
MHCAN provides a drop-in peer support center for people in Santa Cruz County with mental health diagnoses. They operated 52 weeks, 4 days per week, including holidays. MHCAN is limited to 50 participants per day by the city. On the vast majority of days, we had 50 people and had to turn even more people away. Most people would come in the morning and stay the entire 6 hours we were open. MHCAN provided individual support, support groups, a computer room, food, showers, and laundry facilities. MHCAN served as a distribution center for the local food bank. We also provided transportation to and from the center for people living in mental health facilities. 75% of those we served between 2022 and 2025 were unhoused. The organization is staffed by people who themselves have psychiatric diagnoses, and in that way it provides work experience to individuals who might struggle to identify employment opportunities due to their symptoms.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $1.0M to $1.1M (+4%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 58% · 2018 68% · 2019 70% · 2020 69% · 2021 61% · 2022 77% · 2023 90%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
97% of MENTAL HEALTH CLIENT ACTION NETWORK’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (82% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $1k → $30k.
1 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of MENTAL HEALTH CLIENT ACTION NETWORK’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
MENTAL HEALTH CLIENT ACTION NETWORK leans on a few funders — its largest provides 98% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 100% · 2020 99% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
98% of MENTAL HEALTH CLIENT ACTION NETWORK's grant income comes from California funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $51 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
