01What it does

What Mattie C Stewart Foundation does

Mission

Produce tools and resources for educators and community leaders to use to help address the dropout rate in schools.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. The choice bus, launched in late 2008, has continued to forge tremendous success in schools and communities in the southeast, mid-western, and eastern states of the country. The demand for the choice has increased from schools and communities across the u.s. Currently, there are four choice buses. This experienced based learning tool travels to schools and communities giving young people a hands on experience of the benefits of an education, but also the likely consequences of choosing to drop out. The choice bus has been experienced by more than 2 million students in 26 states. The foundation received donated office space in 2024 in the amount of $6,618.

  2. The mattie c. Stewart foundation accomplished much in 2023 in its mission to reduce the dropout rate and increase the graduation rate in america. The insideout toolkit that includes a self-produced documentary portraying the stark consequences of not staying in school along with a companion teacher guide continued to gain traction across the united states. Currently it is being used in classrooms, churches, after-school programs and community organizations in 49 states and parts of canada. The mattie c. Stewart foundation estimates the insideout documentary has been experienced by more than 15 million people since its launch in late 2007; and the response from educators, community leaders, parents and students continues to be overwhelmingly positive. Although insideout impact was successful, it still has only reached a fraction of its target audience and therefore remains a relatively young tool in the mattie c. Stewart foundation toolbox.

  3. Learn2earn is a financial literacy booklet that was created to educate students in grades 7 through 12 about the importance of financial literacy, savings and staying in school. Learn2earn contains lesson plans designed to present financial education material in a straightforward, easy-to-understand way. The more students hear and read facts about personal finance and the advantage gained by attending college and preparing for a career, the more they will be prepared to face the challenging economic environment. Learn2earn is adaptable and can be used in a classroom, after-school program, and club or camp setting. It is intended to be a discussion stimulator for teachers, mentors, and families to incorporate into their existing schedules. Its question/answer format requires minimal planning or preparation on their part.

2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 72% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MATTIE C STEWART FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MATTIE C STEWART FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 72% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

72% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MATTIE C STEWART FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

72% of MATTIE C STEWART FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $86k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from Alabama funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $224k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
