What Local Cloth Inc does
Mission
Sustained by a passion for fiber, Local Cloth is a volunteer-led non-profit network of fiber artists, farmers, small- scale fiber processors, educators, and fiber enthusiasts, dedicated to growing and supporting the fiber economy in Western North Carolina and increasing awareness of and access to regional production and artisan practices.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
On its FY2024 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.
Hurricane Helene forced the closure of the Studio from September 2024 through the end of the fiscal year.
Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).
Retail + Markets: Local Cloth operates a retail shop, online store, and regional market program that provides income-generating opportunities for fiber artists and farmers across the Blue Ridge Mountains Fibershed. Through a combination of brick-and-mortar retail, online sales, and participation in regional markets, Local Cloth connects local producers with customers, increasing visibility and access to locally made fiber goods. During the fiscal year, Local Cloth sold 6,239 items across 9 markets, in addition to ongoing retail shop and online sales. Following Hurricane Helene in September 2024, Local Cloth expanded its market presence and launched an online retail shop to sustain vendor opportunities while the physical studio underwent restoration. Retail operations are supported by staff and volunteers, including vendor participation models that allow artists to contribute time in exchange for increased commission rates. This program plays a critical role in Local Cloths mission by creating economic opportunity, supporting small-scale producers, and increasing public access to locally sourced fiber products.
$212,045 spent$85,555 earned by the program100% of program spendingWorkshops + Education: Local Cloth offers a robust educational program that includes workshops, classes, and interest groups spanning a wide range of fiber arts techniques and skill levels. Programs are designed to support both beginners and advanced practitioners, with instruction provided by regional artists, farmers, and educators. During the fiscal year, Local Cloth hosted 183 workshops, serving 1,024 participants. Programming continued despite disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene, with workshops relocated to more than 10 alternative sites across the region, including artist studios, community spaces, and partner organizations. Interest Groups met regularly, both in-person and virtually, maintaining community connection and ongoing learning opportunities. Education remains central to Local Cloths mission, increasing awareness of regional fiber systems technical skills that support artistic and economic development. Programs emphasize accessibility, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing across the fibershed.
Membership: Local Cloth maintains a membership program that supports a growing network of fiber artists, farmers, educators, and enthusiasts across the Blue Ridge Mountains Fibershed. Membership provides access to workshops, interest groups, retail opportunities, and community resources, while fostering connection and collaboration across the regional fiber economy. During the fiscal year, Local Cloth served 750 members, including 159 new members. Membership engagement remained strong despite disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene, with continued communication, virtual connection opportunities, and in-person gatherings hosted in alternative locations during the studio closure. The Membership Committee plays an active role in welcoming new members and supporting ongoing engagement. Initiatives such as Local Cloth Cares further strengthen community support by providing care and connection during times of need. Membership serves as a foundational element of Local Cloths work, sustaining both programs and relationships across the fibershed.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2022, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2022, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $81k to $242k (+198%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2025 4%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
78% of Local Cloth Inc’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2019 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income fell $18k → $44.
3 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 86% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of Local Cloth Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
Local Cloth Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 57% of grant income and the top three 92%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
95% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Local Cloth Inc.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 99% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
86% of Local Cloth Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $47k that is directly attributable, 63% of it comes from North Carolina funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $295k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
