01What it does

What Kinai Eha does

Mission

Kinai 'Eha was incorporated as a non-profit organization under the laws of the State of Hawai'i in 2017. The organization provides workforce development training in the construction, landscaping, and custodial trades using a trauma-informed, culturally relevant approach. Youth participants learn and practice critical work readiness skills, such as timeliness and positive work ethic. Our programs include hands-on workforce development training, education, and financial literacy. We promote positive living and social skills and create opportunities for a healthy lifestyle that promotes mental wellness and positive expression.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Kinai 'Eha aims to provide an alternative education option to opio that are in need of and seeking purpose, personal empowerment, education, Hawaiian cultural identity and connection, workforce training in construction and the trades, community service and leadership. We believe in identifying and building upon the strengths of the opio, connecting them to the larger lahui and ultimately developing their individual level of self-sufficiency. Through Hawaiian culture-based education and trauma informed approaches we have laid a kahua that develops the two most critical success elements of the program: Puuhonua & 'Ohana. Our C.A.S.E Management - Clarity, Awareness, Significance and Empowerment are the four pillars of Kinai 'Eha and they guide program and service delivery, individual and ohana intervention and action plans.

The Hale is staffed 24/7 with residential management experienced in mentoring youth/young adults and trained in trauma-informed care. It provides stable residency for homeless young adults that want to participate in our workforce development program at Kinai 'Eha.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income fell $258k → $5k.

1 of 10 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Kinai Eha’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 9 of 10 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Kinai Eha leans on a few funders — its largest provides 59% of grant income and the top three 97%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

80% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Kinai Eha.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $21 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
