01What it does

What Kerrville Folk Festival Foundation does

Mission

To promote public appreciation and support for songwriters, the songwriting craft, and folk music by creating a community where songcraft is supported and folk music is enjoyed by people of all ages.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Annually, the Kerrville Folk Festival Foundation ("kff foundation- or "foundation") normally produces the 18-day kerrville folk festival (may 22 - june 8, 2025) and a 3-day event called welcome home fest (october 9-11). Because of severe flooding impacts in the region this year, we canceled welcome home fest to focus on supporting our local community. The kerrville folk festival ("kff") is the foundation's flagship event. Established in 1972, the kff is among the longest continuously running music festivals in the country and, in 2025, we celebrated our 53rd annual festival. During kff, the foundation hosts the kerrville folk festival grassy hill singer songwriter competition. The foundation received almost 1200 entries, from which 24 finalists were selected to perform at the festival. From those 24 finalists, 6 winners are selected; winners receive a cash prize and are invited to participate in a 10-day tour, performing at texas venues. During the festival, we also host a number of seminars and workshops, including instrument specific workshops (harmonica, ukulele and guitar) as well as songwriting workshops on topics such as co-writing and creative process. We also hosted a…

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base narrowed from 4 funders to 3 funders, grant income rose $8k → $8k.

3 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 98% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 57% of grant income and the top three 98%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

98% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

98% of KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $735 that is directly attributable, 93% of it comes from Texas funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $32k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
