Mission

The organization provides a free program of unique horsemanship, wellness, and skill set restructuring that is open to all post 9/11 veterans as well as active military personnel who have sustained post-traumatic stress, combat trauma, or physical injuries during their time of service to our country.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Hands-on programs include cowboy up, a program that provides horsemanship, wellness and skill set restructuring to post 9/11 combat wounded and ptsd- rated veterans, aiding in their post traumatic healing resilience. The program is self-paced, and objective/outcome based. It is both a day program for regional veterans and a residential program for participating veterans from out of state and across the country. The program is self- sustaining with program graduates serving as a cadre with the all-volunteer instructor staff. Approximately 9,600 hours of sessions and veteran activities, including phone, skype, and zoom counseling were provided. Wisdom way for warriors is our hybrid life-skills coaching program. Originally exclusive to women veterans, it is now integrated with our cowboy up program as well as individual coaching sessions. Veteran participant families and couples' personal retreats - veterans who have participated in the cowboy up program are allowed to participate in a personal family or couples retreat, individually designed for their families' pre- and post-development needs. 2. Navajo nation sustainable agriculture program for native american veteran ranchers. This program is conducted cooperatively with villanova university's humanitarian engineering and international development division. We partner with graduate engineering student volunteers to address specific engineering challenges mainly dealing with water on our sister ranch on the navajo nation such as water restoration, reclamation and capture in support of their cow-calf production operation as well as the agriculture elements that are essential to growing hay for feed. Military veterans are fully engaged with the university students in designing, planning, and executing the projects which encompass the entire academic year. Horses for heroes cadre will similarly travel to villanova university to conduct program leader and team selection, oversight, and training as well as project design and planning.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 9 funders, grant income fell $93k → $83k.

5 of 17 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 31% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of HORSES FOR HEROES - NEW MEXICO INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 16 of 17 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

HORSES FOR HEROES - NEW MEXICO INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 42% of grant income and the top three 68%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

38% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund HORSES FOR HEROES - NEW MEXICO INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $186k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
