01What it does

What Helio Foundation does

Mission

The mission of the Helio Foundation is to serve the underserved within our community.

As stated on its FY2022 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2021 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

Part iii line 2: the organization developed three new programs as a response to the damages related to hurricane ida. The programs include a direct funding program where families received money that helped with immediate needs like food and gas for generators and a program called float the boat that assisted independent commercial fishermen in fixing damaged vessels and buying lost equipment necessary to start working again and a home recovery program that assisted residents that had significant storm damage in fixing their homes and replacing home goods lost from storm damage.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. The moving community forward program assisted families in both directly rebuilding damaged homes, replacing lost home goods and restocking food goods lost due to hurricane ida. The individuals participating in this program were referred through community leaders.

    $324,578 spent
    42% of program spending
  2. The emergency funds program allocated $400.00 per family for any family within our service area directly effected by hurricane ida. These funds were used for fuel and food necessary for basic survival in the days and weeks following the storm. Families living in tents and shantys were allocated $1000.00 community leaders referred these individuals to the organization. The organization did not receive any revenue from this program. The funds used for this program were donated by the public.

    $268,101 spent
    35% of program spending
  3. The float the boat program assisted independent commercial fishermen in replacing equipment and repairing damages due to hurricane ida. Each family was allosed up to $4,999.00. This allowed the fishermen to get back to work much quicker and begin rebuilding their families lives and livelihood. No revenue was made from this program. The funds used were from donations received from the public. The organization received a $50,000 grant from the greater new orleans foundation to help with this program. The remainder of these funds were donated by the public.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2021 → 2023: the base narrowed from 11 funders to 3 funders, grant income fell $1.0M → $7k.

3 of 13 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 63% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of HELIO FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

HELIO FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 57% of grant income and the top three 92%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund HELIO FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

63% of HELIO FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $421k that is directly attributable, 83% of it comes from Louisiana funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $706k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
