What Heavenly Pet Sanctuary does
Mission
Exempt Purpose: Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: Heavenly Pet Sanctuarys primary purpose is to rescue and shelter homeless companion animals dogs and cats, provide them with veterinary care, neutering and spaying and place them into permanent homes through adoptions.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
Pet Adoption: Heavenly Pet seeks to find permanent, adoptive homes for our rescued pets. In 2025 we adopted 26 cats and 5 dogs to families all over Iowa and neighboring states. All of the adopted pets received complete healthcare prior to adoption which included, microchip, vaccinations, neutering or spaying, parasite removal and in most cases bloodwork to determine if any transmissible viruses are present. Our pets are listed on an internet database as well as our website with their pictures, videos and descriptions and a link to our adoption application. Each applicant is carefully screened for suitability and home visits are often conducted. Cats and dogs are adopted for a significantly lower fee than the expense of the treatments necessary to prepare them for adoption.
$6,700 spent8% of program spendingAnimal Shelter: Heavenly Pet rescues, shelters and provides veterinary care to lost and homeless dogs and cats. This is accomplished by way of our physical facility consisting of three buildings with outdoor enclosures, dedicated solely to cat and dog housing. Many of our admissions require rehabilitation in the way of veterinary care and/or surgery, ongoing treatment and daily monitoring including fluid therapy, special feeding and medication. In 2025 we housed approximately 65 cats and 5 dogs at our facility, cared for by our part-time staff of 4 people and 15 volunteers.
$81,300 spent92% of program spendingCommunity Outreach: Heavenly Pet has a network of foster families who temporarily care for dogs and cats until permanent homes can be found. Many times, these pets may be special needs, requiring socialization and training that may not be readily available at the shelter. These foster families serve as caretakers for the rescued cats or dogs in their homes and often donate veterinary services, food and pet supplies for them, until such time as they are adopted into permanent homes.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2021, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2021, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2022 to 2023, from $68k to $46k (−33%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 3 of the last 5 reported years ran a deficit.

Who funds it, year by year
Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.
2 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 91% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of Heavenly Pet Sanctuary’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
Heavenly Pet Sanctuary leans on a few funders — its largest provides 57% of grant income and the top three 97%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
91% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Heavenly Pet Sanctuary.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
91% of Heavenly Pet Sanctuary's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $2k that is directly attributable, 68% of it comes from Iowa funders.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $16k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
