What Growing Together Incorporated does
Mission
Our primary exempt purpose is to provide individualized instruction in basic school subjects for students who need help to catch up to grade level in knowledge and skills and to reach their full potential.
As stated on its FY2021 Form 990-EZ.
Program
The only program for Growing Together is tutoring underprivileged students in reading, writing/English, and math when they cannot get the individual help they need elsewhere. We also help parents with content and technique so that they can continue to help their children at home. Most of our parents come from Ethiopia or a South American country and need help with some language basics. Until the pandemic began, volunteer tutors worked with students in a room set aside for us at Long Branch Library, Silver Spring, MD, five days a week. When the pandemic started, schools closed at the same time Long Branch Library closed for renovation in March, 2020. We moved all our books, materials, and student folders to our director's home, which was already the office for Growing Together. We continued tutoring students on Zoom using the same methods as before, with organization and interaction with the director becoming individual rather than often in groups. In 2021 we worked with approximately 20 students with material ranging from kindergarten through grade 8. Our process remained the same. Students were evaluated by our director to find their skill level in our skill building books for…

Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base narrowed from 2 funders to 1 funder, grant income fell $20k → $16.
1 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of GROWING TOGETHER INCORPORATED’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
GROWING TOGETHER INCORPORATED leans on a few funders — its largest provides 86% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
86% of GROWING TOGETHER INCORPORATED's grant income comes from Maryland funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $37 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
