What Government Hill Commons does
Mission
Government Hill Commons, an Alaska nonprofit corporation, ("GHC") is a community organization that was formed to cultivate, nurture, and enhance public spaces in the Government Hill neighborhood in Anchorage, Alaska. GHC was created on July 19, 2016. The central goal of the organization is to develop and maintain a public space, which will be known as the Government Hill Commons (the "Commons"). Initial plans for the Commons include planting a community orchard and making garden beds available for use by locals. There are additional plans to include art projects and a gathering space. The Commons are intended to be a focal point of the neighborhood, uniting the east and west portions of the community and serving as a gateway to people entering Government Hill.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
Because of the Pandemic, 2020 was a hold steady year. No public programs, events, etc. Orchard is in good shape. Lots fruit and several successful experiments: Peaches in Alaska!!!!
$0 spent2019 was another good year at the Commons. Our orchard is now just about complete - we have almost 100 fruit trees in the ground and the warm summer led to and surprisingly robust harvest from our young trees. We also harvested several gallons of honey from our bee hive. In terms of art, our children's mural was an outstanding success. We also received donations for an espalier which is located in the middle of the orchard. We had several children's events that were coordinated with the neighboring elementary school. All in all, a very good year.
$0 spent2021 saw an increase in activity. The Commons hosted two outdoor events. Fruit trees continue to produce and mature. Definitely starting to return to normal after the pandemic.
$0 spentIn 2022, the Commons went into a holding pattern. Basic maintenance and some "swag" (t-shirts, etc) sales. We also hosted several educational events. Our trees continue to mature.
$0 spent2023 was another "maintaining" year. Simple work parties, harvesting, and some "swag" sales.
$0 spent2024 Accomplishments: Water Service hooked up! Significant cleanup of grounds. Prepping for 2025.
$0 spent2025 was a busy year. Culminating in a Fall Harvest Festival at the end of September. Also played host to a native plants nursery. Lots of apples harvested, grounds and maintenance work, etc.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2018, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2018, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $3k to $8k (+149%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
100% of GOVERNMENT HILL COMMONS’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (77% for the typical peer).
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 3 of the last 8 reported years ran a deficit.
