What Golden Crown Literary Society Inc does
Mission
The golden crown literary society (gcls) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, volunteer organization whose mission is education and the promotion and recognition of sapphic literature. Our goals are to: (1) provide learning opportunities, encouragement and assistance to new and established authors in developing their craft; (2) support and strengthen quality sapphic writing by providing educational programs and creating opportunities for readers and writers to interact; and (3) to recognize and promote sapphic literary work.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Present an annual 3-day educational conference for authors, readers, editors, and others within the sapphic literature community. During the fiscal year 2023-2024, more than 300 people participated.
$224,877 spent$247,408 earned by the program81% of program spendingThe gcls writing academy is a year-long program for new writers who already have at least part of a novel written and who qualify regarding a number of different skills/attributes. Over the course of the year, the students 'begin at the beginning', covering the basics of grammar and writing, and then moving on to the foundations of writing, research methods, genre specific skills, the life of a writer, preparing to be published, and ends with a mentoring experience. During the fiscal year 2023-2024, a third educational track was developed. More than 2 dozen students participated and more than 40 mentors and teachers provided expertise in fiscal year 2023-2024.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $127k to $235k (+85%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
29% of GOLDEN CROWN LITERARY SOCIETY INC’s revenue is contributions — more earned-revenue than three-quarters of its peers (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $3k → $100k.
3 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 92% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of GOLDEN CROWN LITERARY SOCIETY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
GOLDEN CROWN LITERARY SOCIETY INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 83% of grant income and the top three 97%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
95% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GOLDEN CROWN LITERARY SOCIETY INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2020 84% · 2021 49% · 2022 90% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
92% of GOLDEN CROWN LITERARY SOCIETY INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $28k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Minnesota, across 2 states.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $332k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
