01What it does

What Global Garden Refugee Training Farm does

Mission

The mission of Global Garden Refugee Training Farms is to improve access to fresh vegetables for refugee families and their neighbors, and to reconnect displaced farmers with opportunities to grow healthy food and earn supplemental income.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The organization creates food security for around 70 displaced refugee farm families who have been resettled in Chicago by providing them with land, water, seeds, tools, and equipment, so they can grow and eat fresh vegetables. They grow many varieties from their countries of origin, which helps preserve healthy eating traditions. They learn about new vegetable crops that are adapted to cold climates and can be incorporated into traditional recipes. We offer healing to farmers who may have been traumatized during displacement. We instill pride in farmers by enabling them to be self-sufficient members of their new community in the United States.

  2. The organization provides training and logistical support to several incubator farmers who grow produce for sale, providing supplemental income for low-income families. We provide the farmers with supplies, marketing, transportation, training, and coaching. Selling their produce to local farmers' markets, restaurants, and other wholesale buyers provides opportunities for these displaced farmers to take pride in fully participating in and contributing to their new community.

  3. The Organization seeks to have a positive impact on the surrounding community. We provide freshly grown vegetables through sales at local restaurants, farmers' markets, and community-supported agriculture subscriptions. We improve the neighborhood ecosystem through the maintenance of beehives and urban green space. We have established a community compost program to encourage sustainable disposal and reuse of organic waste. We host events, such as musical performances and cooking classes, to encourage community engagement

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $10k → $91k.

1 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GLOBAL GARDEN REFUGEE TRAINING FARM’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GLOBAL GARDEN REFUGEE TRAINING FARM leans on a few funders — its largest provides 60% of grant income and the top three 93%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

37% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GLOBAL GARDEN REFUGEE TRAINING FARM.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $137 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
