01What it does

What Gathering Ground Inc does

Mission

We envision thriving communities connected to the environment and their food through work and play. We cultivate community and learning in partnership with the generous earth through agriculture.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2024 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

Community outreach. Help people learn about farming and gardening and give them an opportunity to experience it. Held outreach programs including the farm and field bike tour, the garden tour, harvest day, and dinner in the vineyard.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. Chestnut breeding for northern climates. In our chestnut orchard and nursery we have planted over 700 chestnut trees, breeding specifically for trees that will produce nut with a low number of degree days, suited to our climate. We are looking to develop a valuable food crop for our region that doesn't require annual tillage. Working with partner organizations in ohio, michigan, and wisconsin, we chose genetics that will ripen early.

  2. Community gardening. To provide a place for people to learn about gardening, orcharding and preservation, we are developing a community garden where all ages can come together and grow vegetables, plant fruit and nut trees, and enjoy the harvest. Our community garden is also adding to the food security of our community by donating produce to our community pantry, families with school-age children, and the elderly.

  3. Ground school, young adult education on climate-smart and sustainable agriculture. In its 7th year, ground school is now a 10-week program that combines hand on learning in the field, practicing climate-smart agricultural techniques and seminar studies around current topics in agriculture and food equity. We have reached students from across the country.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $5 → $2k.

3 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 83% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of GATHERING GROUND INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

GATHERING GROUND INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 42% of grant income and the top three 93%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

83% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund GATHERING GROUND INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

83% of GATHERING GROUND INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $4k that is directly attributable, 59% of it comes from funders outside Wisconsin, across 2 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $21k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
