01What it does

What Friends of Sellwood Community House does

Mission

Sellwood community house is a non-profit community center that offers affordable, accessible classes and programming for all ages, rental space, special events and opportunities for community engagement.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. During the year, sellwood community house (sch) experienced significant program growth while simultaneously navigating ongoing insurance claim challenges related to facility impacts. Despite these complexities, sch sustained and expanded high-quality, community-driven programming across all ages and stages of life. Services included early childhood education with universal preschool speech assessments to support equitable developmental access, robust after-school and youth enrichment programming, and a wide range of adult and intergenerational activities designed to reduce isolation and strengthen community connection. Sch further expanded its impact through the launch of two major initiatives: the playlab, a dedicated indoor early learning and play space for children ages 05 and their caregivers, and the shack at sellwood park, a free, outdoor summer recreation program that significantly increased access to community-based play and engagement in southeast portland. Across all offerings, sch remained responsive to evolving community needs, reinforcing its role as a vital, community-supported hub for connection, learning, and wellbeing.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income fell $66k → $46k.

6 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 21% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of FRIENDS OF SELLWOOD COMMUNITY HOUSE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 7 of 8 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

FRIENDS OF SELLWOOD COMMUNITY HOUSE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 78% of grant income and the top three 96%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

99% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund FRIENDS OF SELLWOOD COMMUNITY HOUSE.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 92% · 2023 86% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $195k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
