01What it does

What Francis Small Heritage Trust Inc does

Mission

The Francis Small Heritage Trust protects wildlife habitat, watersheds, forests, and farms in southwestern Maine to support conservation, climate resilience, low-impact recreation, traditional uses, environmental education, and to honor Indigenous connections to the land.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. FSHT performed due diligence towards purchase of new properties for public use expected to close in 2026. These parcels will provide a direct connection to existing properties which guarantees connectivity for wildlife and trails. This land will be open to the public for low-impact recreation including hiking and hunting and some will be permanently protected by a project agreement with the Maine Land for Maine's Future Program and/or a permanent conservation easement. FSHT also accepted in 2025 a donated Conservation Easement on 36.5 acres in Standish Maine. No asset value for the easement is carried on the books.

  2. Provided stewardship, education, and outreach on approximately 3,194 acres of land in and around Limington, Limerick, Baldwin, Porter, Parsonsfield, Newfield, Waterboro, Standish, and Cornish, Maine. These properties conserve natural resources and provide for public access, enjoyment, and education. Stewardship included land taxes, and trail maintenance. The statewide recognized resource has an estimated 5,000 visitors a year, including school groups. Outreach included distributing 1,000 free hiking maps to the public, all to encourage hiking in the area. Granted $1,100 to the Town of Limington as Payment In Lieu of Taxes (PILOT). The organization also paid local property taxes of $10,501 in Limerick, Baldwin, Parsonsfield, Porter, Waterboro, and Cornish even though the organization could be technically exempted from such taxes.

  3. Continued our education outreach to local schools the "Sense of Place" program. Approximately 120 students were served by the program. We also worked on a "Forest Carbon Workshop" area on Sawyer Mountain where the public can measure the carbon content of the forest and can investigate ways to manage a forest for maximum carbon sequestration. Approximately twenty volunteers established the program and the forest plots are open to the public. FSHT also published a newsletter which offered directions and descriptions of our local hiking trails. This newsletter was distributed to approximately 14,000 addresses.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 3 funders, grant income rose $11k → $12k.

4 of 14 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 22% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of FRANCIS SMALL HERITAGE TRUST INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

FRANCIS SMALL HERITAGE TRUST INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 34% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

63% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund FRANCIS SMALL HERITAGE TRUST INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

33% of FRANCIS SMALL HERITAGE TRUST INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 43% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $85k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
