What Fishchoice Inc does
Mission
Fishchoice Inc is organized as a public charity to decrease the environmental impacts of the seafood industry by creating tools to increase the amount of seafood purchased from sustainable sources and decrease the amount of seafood purchased from sources that degrade the environment.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
Fishchoice has designed, developed now manages a sophisticated web site that provides the following: please visit our website at www.fishchoice.com. 1) commercial seafood buyers are connected with the most environmentally preferred and sustainable seafood suppliers. Sustainable seafood is fish and shellfish that is caught or farmed in ways that maintain healthy populations and have minimum impact on the environment. 2 consumers of seafood products are directed to a web page designed for consumers that educates the public about where they can purchase seafoods from restaurants or retailers that carry sustainable seafoods. 3) all seafood products featured on the fishchoice web site meet the strict ranking and certification criteria of at least one of the environmental community's leading organizations. 4) fishchoice doesn't do any of the ranking or certification. The charity takes the criteria and applies it to matching seafood products. 5) fishchoice collaborates with nine of the world's leading environmental organizations to make sustainable and environmentally preferable seafood more easily accessible. These organizations are as follows: aquaculture stewardship council, national…
$1,399,217 spent50% of program spendingFishchoice has developed an online tool to track the improvements of fisheries globally. Over 90% of global fishery improvement projects that are run by various ngo's around the globe are tracked in one place, fisheryprogress.org. This enables governments, ngo's and industry to efficiently push for improvements that lead to more sustainable fisheries. Fisheryprogress.org is overseen by an advisory committee and managed day to day by fishchoice.
$1,147,358 spent41% of program spendingOrganization personnel have attended numerous seafood industry conferences in order to educate buyers and suppliers of seafood products about fishchoice and how the organization's website can be used by the seafood industry to increase purchases of sustainable seafood products and decrease demand pressures on fishes and aquaculture that are not sustainable. Knowledge gleaned at these conferences allows fishchoice to define policies and procedures in a manner compatible with other nonprofit entities operating in the same or similar national and global environment space.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2022 to 2023, from $2.9M to $1.1M (−60%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2021 5%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
99% of FISHCHOICE INC’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (88% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 4 funders, grant income rose $1.8M → $3.2M.
2 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 8% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of FISHCHOICE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
FISHCHOICE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 34% of grant income and the top three 74%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 65% · 2019 98% · 2020 56% · 2021 49% · 2022 35% · 2023 33% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
FISHCHOICE INC draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside Colorado, across 2 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.2M arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
