What Family Legal Assistance at Choc Childrens does
Mission
Provide free legal representation to low income families who need the services for health care purposes.
As stated on its FY2019 Form 990.
Program
This program provides free full attorney representation to low income families undergoing medical treatment at children's hospital of orange county (choc) and in need of legal services to be able to access medical care. The organization provides a limited scope of legal services, including guardianships, conservatorships, powers of attorney and advanced health care directives. Conservatorships are usually provided for severely developmentally disabled adults who need another adult to continue to consent to their care. These individuals are usually recipients of ssi, medi-cal and regional center services. Guardianships are provided to children (ages 0-17) who need medical services, but do not have biological parents present to consent to those medical services. The program helps the caregiver obtain legal authority to make medical decisions, enroll the child in school, and carry out day-to-day tasks on behalf of the child. There are times when a court order is not necessary based on the circumstances. In these cases, a power of attorney or advanced health care directive will be drafted to assist the family. The program primarily serves residents of orange county, although services…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2018, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2018, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2018 to 2019, from $117 to $154k (+131151%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Surplus & reserves

Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income fell $95 → $16.
1 of 2 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 2% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2021 99% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are
FAMILY LEGAL ASSISTANCE AT CHOC CHILDRENS draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside California, across 1 state in all.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $241 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
