01What it does

What Etm-Massachusetts Inc does

Mission

Education through music-massachusetts (etm-ma) partners with under-resourced schools to provide music as a core subject for all children, and utilizes music education as a catalyst to improve academic achievement, motivation for school, and self-confidence. We launch new music programs at schools that need us most, build and strengthen music programs that exist, and support all programs we work with to become sustainable and transformative in their school community.

As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.

Program

  1. Etm-ma's school partnership program collaborates with boston public schools (bps) to build high quality and sustainable in-school music programs. We form long-term partnerships with elementary, middle, and high schools within the boston public school system that are located in historically low-income communities and lack sufficient resources for effective school-wide music education. Etm-ma collaborates closely with each partner school principal, creating a multi-year plan for each school to drive success and meet schools' unique needs and populations. All of our services are completely free to students, their families, and teachers. Our school partnership program includes creating new music programs for schools, providing coaching and program development services, building a music teacher pipeline for bps, and music teacher training and professional development. With our new music program school partners, we hire and pay for the music teacher, purchase all the instruments the school needs, help create a music education curricula, and train the music teacher to get them teacher certified and ready to be hired by the school and the boston teacher union. With our coaching and…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income fell $80k → $34k.

1 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ETM-MASSACHUSETTS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ETM-MASSACHUSETTS INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 52% of grant income and the top three 90%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

39% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ETM-MASSACHUSETTS INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $121 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
