01What it does

What Erlanger Health does

Mission

We compassionately care for people.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

On its FY2024 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

On november 30, 2024, Erlanger Health assumed the assets and liabilities of the erlanger foundation - previously the 501(c)(3) fundraising arm of erlanger. As a department of erlanger, the trade name ("erlanger foundation") was maintained by erlanger. Additionally, the previous board of directors of erlanger foundation was reconstituted from a fiduciary board to a non-fiduciary committee of the Erlanger Health board under the title of the "erlanger foundation advancement council".

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. Erlanger Health is a tennessee non-profit, public benefit corporation exempt from federal income taxes as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code of 1986, as amended. Erlanger Health and its affiliates own and operate hospitals and other health care facilities known as Erlanger Health (the "health system or "erlanger") located primarily in and near the city of chattanooga, tennessee (the "hospital facilities"). Prior to july 1, 2023, the hospital facilities were owned and operated by the chattanooga-hamilton county hospital authority. On july 1, 2023, the hospital authority transferred the hospital facilities to the erlanger pursuant to a mission agreement dated august 29, 2022 among the hospital authority, erlanger and hamilton county, tennessee. Founded in 1889 by french nobleman, baron frederic emile d'erlanger, the hospital opened in 1899 with 72 beds. Soon after opening, erlanger formed one of the state's first nursing schools and developed a partnership with chattanooga medical college, now the university of tennessee at chattanooga.erlanger continues its commitment to excellence as an academic medical center and passion for advancing…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

1 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 59% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $570k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Erlanger Foundation). These are real filings, and they are not money ERLANGER HEALTH raised.

From the IRS filings of ERLANGER HEALTH’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ERLANGER HEALTH leans on a few funders — its largest provides 59% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

59% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ERLANGER HEALTH.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

59% of ERLANGER HEALTH's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $70k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from Tennessee funders.

TN

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $102k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
