01What it does

What Earth & Space Research does

Mission

Increase societal understanding of the earth system through scientific research and education.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Nasa: [1] produce icesat2 iceberg draft estimates around antarctica to improve water depth estimates, improving navigation in the southern ocean; understanding & modelling eddy-sea ice interplay using icesat2; swoticesat-2 comparisons to improve satellite retrievals. [2] calibration and validation of nasa smap datasets: development of novel methods and platforms to compare with in situ measurements; production of continuous data record from all salinity satellites.[3] esr produces the oscar ocean surface current analysis, informing both freshwater transport and supporting maritime industries.[4] linking north atlantic salinity and eddies to arctic freshwater transport, a key driver of density which controls sea ice formation.[5] evaluate salinity & sea ice formation in the arctic. [continued][1] as part of esr's effort to observe and quantify interactions between sea ice, ice shelves, icebergs and the ocean around antarctica using icesat-2 altimetry, novel techniques were developed to process icesat-2 data to estimate iceberg drafts in coastal antarctic regions to improve water depth estimates. These estimates can inform maritime traffic in the southern ocean and provide ocean…

  2. National science foundation (nsf):earth and space scientists supported a field season in south-west greenland in support of the icecaps-melt program. Icecaps-melt is a collaborative effort to understand atmospheresnow interactions on the greenland ice sheet, with a focus on melt processes in the high interior. Esr scientists curated and published in-situ snow property datasets and ran high-resolution snow and energy-budget models, integrating observations from autonomous observatories at summit station and camp raven and leveraging citizen science. This work provides critical context for satellite measurements and improves predictions of how surface melt will evolve.

  3. Norwegian polar institute: earth and space research scientists installed and supported the integrated cloud and boundary-layer observatory at the troll observing network, a research station in antarctica that is operated by the norwegian polar institute. The observation station combines state-of-the-art sensors including scanning cloud radar, microwave radiometry, depolarization lidar, and automated radiosonde systems to provide continuous observations of antarctic clouds, radiation, and boundary-layer processes. Esr scientists collaborate on installation, data analysis, and modeling, delivering real-time datasets that help unravel how antarctic clouds regulate energy exchange and contribute to global weather patterns.

  4. Esr summer institute:the summer institute is a mentored research and training program that engages students in geoscience and data science projects addressing real-world challenges. In 2025, we developed the skills of four students, resulting in externally visible outcomes, including blog publications, conference presentations, and peer-review articles, while strengthening the earth science workforce pipeline.

Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $215 → $16k.

3 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of EARTH & SPACE RESEARCH’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

EARTH & SPACE RESEARCH leans on a few funders — its largest provides 85% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund EARTH & SPACE RESEARCH.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 99% — broadly stable.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of EARTH & SPACE RESEARCH's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $179k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
