01What it does

What Donate Life Texas Inc does

Mission

Donate life texas is texas' statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to helping texans safely and securely document their official organ donation decision. Dlt maintains the glenda dawson donate life texas registry the state's only official tissue, eye, and organ donor registry which was established by the 79th texas legislature in 2005. The registry empowers individuals to record legally-binding consent to post-mortem organ, eye, and tissue donation for the purposes of transplantation, education, or research. In addition to managing the registry, dlt is a unifying voice for donation in the state and provides public education, information, and outreach. With approximately 10,000 texans awaiting a lifesaving transplant and thousands more awaiting tissue or eye donation, dlt works to save and improve lives by adding personnel to the active registry. Due to dlt's ongoing efforts, almost 15.3 million texans are now registered approximately 62% of the state's population.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Dlt sponsored several events in 2024 to increase public awareness, inspire donation, and create/maintain donor advocates. Dlt organizes communications for key commemorations and observances such as: black history month, national donate life month, pride month, transplant games, dps appreciation month, and hispanic heritage month. Donate life texas continues to partner with nascar driver joey gase, which brings statewide and nationwide attention to organ donation in texas. Dlt participates annually in the texas association of student council (tasc) conference, which introduces thousands of texas high school student leaders to organ donation and stimulates various organ donor drives around the state. Dlt gives back to communities around texas by sponsoring several events such as bike rides, runs, donor registration drives, and other events - all of which raise awareness around the state among thousands of texans.

  2. The dlt executive director and board of directors consistently engage texas state legislators and staffers on data, trends, and donation equities. The state legislature is scheduled to meet again in 2024. During the 2023 cycle and throughout 2024, dlt provided several members and staffers with information on such topics as "mandatory opt-out" systems and living donation opportunities. As part of effective communications to congressional leaders, donate life texas brings together several organizations around the state in order to promote communication alignment and consistency which include: texas' 3 organ procurement organizations, eye banks, tissue banks, living donor organizations, volunteers, advocates, donor families, funeral professionals, academic personnel, medical professionals, and others.

  3. Donate life texas' partnership with texas department of public safety (dps) in 2024 added just over 720,000 texans who said 'yes' to organ, eye, and tissue donation. Texas' transportation code requires organ, eye, and tissue donation educational materials are available to all those conducting business at the 250+ texas driver's license offices across the state. Additionally, the code requires all dl and id card applicants be asked about becoming an organ donor. To satisfy these requirements, donate life texas continues to provide training, education, material and recognition programs to texas dps offices, leaders, and personnel to leverage their public interactions on behalf of organ, eye, and tissue donation. Dlt's efforts with dps here resulted in over 90% of all those who joined the registry did so through a dps office. In addition to a partnership with dps, dlt also coordinates organ donation awareness with the department of motor vehicles (vehicle registration) and texas parks and wildlife agency (hunting and fishing licenses.)

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $8k → $10k.

2 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 43% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of DONATE LIFE TEXAS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

DONATE LIFE TEXAS INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 57% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

43% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund DONATE LIFE TEXAS INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration.
