01What it does

What Creative Aging Memphis does

Mission

Improve quality of life for seniors by stimulating their minds, creativity, and sense of self through arts programs that engage, educate, and entertain.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Creative aging's 3 arts-based programs engage older adults at places they live or gather. Programs include the concert series, community performances, and studio courses. The 2025-26 concert series included 21 events featuring memphis' best arts organizations and individual artists. The concert series impacted older adults 6951 times. Community performances and study courses took place 1,870 times in over 110 locations across 36 zip codes in the greater memphis area, including senior centers, senior housing, libraries, museums, theaters and more. Combined 2025 programs engaged older adults a total of 61,192 times. Participants in creative aging's studio courses had opportunities to showcase their artwork at art shows held at theatre memphis, the memphis public library, and at various senior centers. Creative aging's programs help drive the local arts economy by paying 164+ artists and musicians who teach or perform as part of our classes and events. These performances and classes benefit seniors and the community as a whole by activating participants' creative capacity, building community and reducing the negative health consequences of social isolation and inactivity.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 5 funders, grant income rose $8k → $53k.

5 of 11 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 48% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of CREATIVE AGING MEMPHIS’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CREATIVE AGING MEMPHIS leans on a few funders — its largest provides 40% of grant income and the top three 76%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

84% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CREATIVE AGING MEMPHIS.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

60% of CREATIVE AGING MEMPHIS's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 45% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $210k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
