What Coast 2 Coast Movement Inc does

Mission

The primary purpose of beyond the surface international (btsi) is to educate and empower youth in small-scale fishing villages. Btsi is an adjunct educational institution with a mission to provide local educators with innovative positive youth development tools, training, and safe- spaces for children in coastal communities that are threatened by climate change, global warming, and sea level rise. The goal is to support the young people in these communities while they learn that their small-scale fishing communities are vitally important in the context of food security, livelihoods, natural-cultural heritage, and climate resilience. This is done through workshops with local educators involving art projects, storytelling, surfing, mindfulness training and other activities that motivate youth to actively engage themselves and their communities for the betterment of their socio-economic relationships and the marine environment so that natural resources are protected and enhanced.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

The small-scale fisheries guidelines curriculum - btsi developed the small-scale fisheries guidelines curriculum working with the sponsorship and support of the united nations food and agriculture organization (fao), the lighthouse foundation, and the nature conservancy. Btsi created this 538-page curriculum in consultation with local educators to implement the faos voluntary guidelines for securing sustainable small-scale fisheries in the context of food security and poverty eradication during 2022, the international year of artisanal fisheries and aquaculture. Btsi worked directly and in-person with over 2,300 teachers and students in peru and virtually in nigeria, madagascar and india to develop a curriculum as a learning framework for rural educators and young learners to explore, imagine, and put into action the fao guidelines in their unique fishing communities. In peru, btsi conducted in-person workshops in the fishing communities along the northern coast in the communities of lobitos, el nuno, and tumbes and in madagascar, nigeria, and india. Aa team of scientists, educators, and artists worked with local teachers to formulate lesson plans. Btsi also facilitated teacher…

2 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 54% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of COAST 2 COAST MOVEMENT INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

COAST 2 COAST MOVEMENT INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 53% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

54% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund COAST 2 COAST MOVEMENT INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $20k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
