Mission

Our Mission: Provide a healing environment for children, teens, and their families grieving a death.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. The Children's Grief Center of the Great Lakes Bay Region provides compassionate, no cost grief support for children and teens ages 4 to 18. Through our grief support programs, we help young people navigate loss with understanding, connection and hope. In 2024, we served more than 700 children and 500 caregivers across Midland, Bay and Saginaw counties, reaching far beyond our original service area: 16 counties in all. Our school-based programs expanded from 40 to 55 schools, providing daytime grief groups that remove barriers such as cost and transportation. Evening peer-support groups were held at our Midland home office, Unity of Bay City, and the MidMichigan Children's Museum in Saginaw, allowing families to participate close to home. Programs were facilitated by trained professionals and volunteers using creative, developmentally appropriate activities such as art, journaling, play and guided discussions to help children process emotions and build coping skills. Our team now includes more than 80 dedicated volunteers and multiple university interns studying counseling and social work. Each contributes to a trauma-informed, supportive environment that empowers grieving…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income fell $18k → $17k.

8 of 14 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 76% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Childrens Grief Center of the Great Lakes Bay Region’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Childrens Grief Center of the Great Lakes Bay Region leans on a few funders — its largest provides 53% of grant income and the top three 75%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

82% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Childrens Grief Center of the Great Lakes Bay Region.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $330k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
