01What it does

What Canton Historical Society Inc does

Mission

To preserve and maintain the historical collection of the canton museum. To educate visitors on the history of the town, the importance of the local manufacturing base, lifestyles in the victorian era, and the tools and trades practiced in the area. The life of settlers and prominent individuals are included in primary source materials.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Museum operations - tours are given by the museum staff and others on aspects of life in the canton environs and describing the use of items contained in the collection. The museum is open to the general public with individualized tours being offered. Approx 3,000 individuals from the u.s. And several foreign countries toured the museum. Several open houses are held each year to allow individuals to view the collection free of charge. The in-kind donations of our volunteer staff are integral to the support of these activities. In addition to viewing the collection, some visitors use the museum library and collection as research for school projects, authors writing books on various topics, tv producers doing research for historical shows and people who want to do genealogical research on their families.

  2. Group tours and local history publications are provided to members and visitors. The museum tries to promote interest in continuing education about elements of our past, and how they affect our current lives through research and publication of various materials. In addition special group tours are arranged for students, seniors, scouting groups, and others who are interested in specific aspects of the museums collections. The museum gift shop carries several books relating to local history as well as a collection of historical maps and ephemera from the collins company (ax factory) that operated in town. A lecture series brings speakers from a variety of fields related to history that affected canton. The general public is the primary audience.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $2k → $10k.

1 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of CANTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CANTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 38% of grant income and the top three 88%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

51% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CANTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $63 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
