What California Cleft Pup Rescue does
Mission
To rescue cleft-affected and special needs newborn puppies and/or kittens by implementing and maintaining an active rescue, foster families for puppies 5 weeks and above and an adoption program.
As stated on its FY2026 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
As a neonatal special needs rescue, we have been able to rescue 245 neonatal babies this year. Of the 245 rescued puppies, 76 did not survive. Some are too sick on arrival, some have pneumonia due to aspiration, and some just do not thrive among other health issues. Many are born with hydrocephalus and only live a short time, although we do have 4 right now that are going on 1 year old. We save these hydro babies and give them a loving home for however long they live. We have found wonderful forever homes for 164 puppies this year. 25 puppies are in foster care at this time and will be looking for their forever home very soon. Every puppy or kitten that comes in goes to the veterinarian for initial and final wellness checks, vaccines and any procedures, if necessary.
$148,735 spent88% of program spendingWe have expanded our foster family support by 3 new families this year. We currently have 12 foster families. The rescue pays for all their supplies, formula, food, vet visits, etc. and they supply the love and caring needed until the puppies and or kittens are adopted. The vet fees for any babies in foster is included in the expense number above.
$7,128 spent4% of program spendingThis year we have been able to expand our outreach by finding a driver who is willing to drive longer distances to pickup these sick puppies and transport them to our rescue. This has greatly freed up my time to stay local and be available for the puppies we have on hand already as they usually require tube feedings every 2 to 3 hours.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2024, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2024, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $18k to $0 (−100%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
100% of California Cleft Pup Rescue’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (86% for the typical peer).
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 1 of the last 3 reported years ran a deficit.
Who funds it, year by year
2022 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income rose $693 → $781.
2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 88% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of California Cleft Pup Rescue’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
California Cleft Pup Rescue leans on a few funders — its largest provides 87% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
88% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund California Cleft Pup Rescue.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2022 72% · 2023 64% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
88% of California Cleft Pup Rescue's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $6k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside California, across 2 states.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $42k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
