Programs

  1. Created for neighborhood planning and community revitalization activities in ward 5 of the city of cleveland. In 30 years of existence, bbc primarily focused its efforts on neighborhood planning and restoring the residential fabric of the community by facilitating a variety of housing projects and supportive services in the central community. We evolved into a full service community development corporation serving the central and lower kinsman neighborhoods. Additional neighborhoods that we now support. 2. In 30 years we have seen indicators, such as low foreclosure rates, purposeful re-use of large tracts of desolate land and the successful rental of retail spaces within once infamous crime-infested areas, demonstrates our effectiveness at charting the path of neighborhood recovery within the most challenged neighborhoods of cleveland. With such proven success we are poised to cultivate a new thriving neighborhood.

  3. Bbc is comprised of a dynamic staff of seventeen highly dedicated and accomplished community development practitioners. Joy johnson, the executive director since may 2020, joined the organization in 2002. We worked closely with partners to leverage resources to provide over 4,000 community residents with weekly dinners, fresh produce, and personal protective equipment. We supported 19 business with rental or mortgage assistance and technical assistance to ensure they remain viable in our community. We completed the financing for colfax family homes, 36 single-family homes that will create low- to moderate-income housing options in the kinsman neighborhood. These homes will change the landscape of the street and community as we implement our neighborhood master plan. Other key programs and services include: "boxspot small business venture "health & wellness education for youth & adults home repair assistance "programs focusing on the arts "retail development "housing development & occupancy "greenspace development and maintenance…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 10 funders to 11 funders, grant income fell $1.9M → $1.8M.

4 of 29 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 16% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of BURTEN BELL CARR DEVELOPMENT INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

BURTEN BELL CARR DEVELOPMENT INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 37% of grant income and the top three 71%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

77% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund BURTEN BELL CARR DEVELOPMENT INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.9M arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
