01What it does

What Avon Hills Folk School does

Mission

Build and enrich community through the sharing and teaching of traditional practices, craft and art.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. TRADITIONAL SKILLS, CRAFTS AND ARTS: Avon Hills' purpose is building and enriching community through the teaching and sharing of traditional skills, craft and art. We do this through connecting local and regional artists and makers as well as naturalists from many cultural backgrounds with members of our community. In 2024 we offered 42 experiences and classes and brought 38 instructors to campus, 24 of them new and a 300% increase over 2023. Of note was our inaugural Timber Framing for FLINTA, which brought those who do not identify as male to the folk school for a timber framing course taught by two women. Also exciting was our second year of welcoming April Ogimaakwe Stone, an Ojibwe basket weaver from the Bad River Tribe in northern Wisconsin to share her culture and craft. We increasingly draw from all over the United States, bringing folks from the Upper Midwest and coast to coast.

  2. YOUTH PROGRAMMING: Avon Hills Folk School youth programming (under 18 years of age) offers classes and experiences involving traditional skills, crafts and art similar to, but adjusted for the young learners. In addition we provide experiences deeply rooted in and taking place in the natural environment for our young learners, including TimberNook and other nature-based programming. Children grow in their confidence and experience in: creativity, collaboration, physical, social-emotional, conflict resolution, self-regulation, executive functioning and moving within and experiencing the natural world, in community with other children, often of diverse backgrounds.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 5 funders, grant income rose $7k → $42k.

3 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 27% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of AVON HILLS FOLK SCHOOL’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 6 of 7 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

AVON HILLS FOLK SCHOOL leans on a few funders — its largest provides 48% of grant income and the top three 85%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

81% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund AVON HILLS FOLK SCHOOL.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 77% · 2022 60% · 2023 34% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $82k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
