01What it does

What Animal Survival International USA Inc does

Mission

Animal Survival International (ASI) works to help wildlife around the world whose survival is threatened by climate change, habitat destruction, the illegal wildlife trade, poor legislation and inadequate law enforcement.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Drought mitigation: Providing emergency relief and long-term solutions for animals suffering through drought. In Botswana, ASI worked with local partners to mitigate the effects of drought on animals, including: providing food for hippos whose food sources had disappeared; constructing a water trough for thirsty animals; installing a pump and solar panels at an existing borehole, increasing output from 20,000-30,000 liters per day to 50,000-60,000 per day; upgrading an existing borehole to increase operational time by at least eight hours daily; and installing a solar-powered pump at another waterhole where animals were getting trapped in the mud due to the drought. In Zimbabwe, we repaired a vandalized substation that resulted in a water outage at our partner's sanctuary. Global reach: Supporting wild animals worldwide. Through our international arm, we support wildlife conservation and protection projects in various countries across Africa, Asia and Europe.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2021 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $211 → $385.

3 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 98% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Animal Survival International USA Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Animal Survival International USA Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 57% of grant income and the top three 98%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

98% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Animal Survival International USA Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

98% of Animal Survival International USA Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $65k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
